Did you know that 100,000 cows a day are killed in American alone? Did you know over 1.3 billion people could be fed each year from the grain and soybeans that go to livestock in the US?

This is a blog devoted to sharing the truth about what factory farming can do. Please try to purchase free range meat and support local farmers.

I just got started, so please feel free to submit articles and things for me to post!

What The Kids Are Eating of the Day: Ruled not good enough by America’s largest fast-food chains, the so-called “pink slime” — meat and meat by-products treated with ammonia — is still A-OK by U.S. Department of Agriculture standards.
In fact, the USDA will reportedly purchase over 7 million pounds of the gunk to turn into hamburgers and tacos for cafeterias feeding America’s schoolchildren.
McDonald’s, Burger King, and Taco Bell were all persuaded to stop using ammonia-treated meat after the practice of rinsing dog-grade meat with ammonia to wash away harmful bacteria was brought to the attention of consumers by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver.
“We’re taking a product that would be sold in its cheaper form for dogs,” said Oliver on his TV show Food Revolution. “After this process, we can give it to humans.”
But a USDA spokesman said there were no plans to stop using pink slime as part of the national school lunch program.
“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as the Food Safety and Inspection Service considers ammonium hydroxide as ‘generally recognized as safe,’” said the spokesman, Aaron Lavallee. “FSIS reviewed the suitability of Beef Products Inc.’s use of ammonium hydroxide in order to assess its effectiveness in performing the intended technical purpose of use, at lowest level necessary, and to ensure that the product is not adulterated or misleading to consumers.”
However, since ammonia beef falls outside the jurisdiction of federal labeling requirements, parents have no way of knowing what exactly is being served to their kids.

Have you ever wondered what goes in those chicken nuggets you love so much?

Well, a lot of the parts from animals were once wasted. In the 1960s, in order to make more of a profit, someone created a way to make all of those extra pieces of the animals (like the eyes, tendons, the meat stuck to the bones, ect.) into something more edible.

First the chicken goes through a deboner. The machine smashes the bones and other pieces. The product is a slight pink color because of the liver, heart and kidneys that are mixed in.

A lot of bacteria is in the goo, so the chicken is soaked with ammonium hydroxide to kill bacteria and anhydrous ammonia to keep it fresh. Then they add artificial flavoring to get rid of the nasty taste and make it taste more like chicken. Then a bunch of artificial color is added to make it look less pink and more like white meat.

Ta-da! That is how you make a chicken nugget! Clearly that sounds so healthy and good for your body.

vegan-quotes:

”I want to ask you not to turn away, not to close your eyes during this video. It’s because if you choose to eat meat, cheese, milk and eggs, I think, at the very least, you are obligated to see the pain and suffering you are causing. But if you do feel the need to turn away or close your eyes during this video, you might want to ask yourself a question: If it’s not good enough for my eyes, then why is it good enough for my stomach?” - Gary Yourofsky

GET HUMANE GET HEALTHY

make sure you combine your beans with rice or quinoa to get your complete proteins

^ that. I’m over telling people that they shouldn’t eat meat and no one’s diet is my business but I highly recommend cutting red meat out of your diet. It’s straight up bad for you. We all have vices and people love steak but if you have a choice and are willing to, avoiding red meat could be one of the best choices you make for your body.

Fact: While veggie eating holds many health benefits, it also has other interesting effects on the body: research shows that avoiding red meat improves the sex appeal of male body odour.

I completely support what you're doing, but I don't understand why "Please try to purchase free range meat and support local farmers.' instead of "Please stop eating animals" :)

I’m really glad you asked this and I hope you don’t mind me answering publicly, I just want to make sure everyone knows where I stand. I fully support vegetarians and vegans, and I truly believe it’s the right thing to do, but I also think it’s a bit impossible to convince everyone to convert. There are too many meat lovers out there. So instead of shoving the lifestyle that I think is correct down their throats, I think the best approach is to tell people how to continue living the way they want without causing as much harm to the environment. According to a report from the United Nations in 2006, livestock contributes to 18 percent of world wide greenhouse gases. Most of this comes from factory farming and transporting all of the meat so far away. Buying from local farms is better for the environment and the economy. It promotes local and small businesses, and most local farmers don’t treat their cattle as horribly as factory farms. Buying from local farmers or just becoming a vegetarian will really help the world.

Fact: A cow normally lives from 20 to 25 years. Dairy cows however have a much shorter lifespan - usually under 5 years - because their bodies can’t take so much forced milking and calf production (the cows are impregnated on a regular basis). Once the cow is deemed “useless”, she is slaughtered.
